    TURQUOISE PROVENANCE:
The turquoise this is made with came from the LARRY COOLEY' 1950's-'60's mined "Once in a lifetime" turquoise collection.. Larry was known in the industry as the ‘go-to' turquoise guy’ who was known for having THE biggest, the highest quality-the most incredible collection of premium turquoise out of anyone,so that when designers like Federico would come along to buy,he could use these gems for his own jewelry designs.
Federico & Larry were extremely close & were such good friends,so much so that before Larry passed,he requested that his huge & HIGHLY collectible collection of vintage mined turquoise be passed on to Federico because Larry knew that Federico was the best one who would put these stones to the best of their use. Federico of course, put these stones into some of his most incredibly designed pieces you'll ever see & once they're used up,they're gone..(See my Federico necklace, earrings, bracelet listings)
Larry had a big reputation for his turquoise & all you had to do was say "Larry Cooley Turquoise" & that alone, said it all..

    DESCRIPTION:
No,this isn't the biggest Kachina pendant that bares Federico's name, nor is it massively heavy in weight, but what this DOES have is some dynamite & premium quality Blue Gem turquoise! (Reflected in price)
One thing I have to admit is that it's not everyday you get turquoise with this sort of quality, but to get some of the most prized turquoise known to turquoise connoisseurs & that's turquoise from the Nevada Blue Gem mine.. I've come across Blue Gem turquoise jewelry & nothing compares to the color like this pendant has! They just don't have that rich teal-mouthwatering Caribbean blue/green color like the better grades have.
I remember when I 1st got in this business (Early 70's) & was a jeweler at the time & it was this quality that all of us metalsmith's were aching to get our hands on! The mine closed back during that time in the 70's & like any stone graded on the MOH'S scale of hardness,(Diamonds being a 10) Blue Gem is one of THE more harder of turquoise's ,which means you don't have to stabilize it to make it hard in order to cut it (That's another story!)
Made in a statuesque 4-3/4" length, the Kachina's elaborate headdress is made up of non-matching cuts & sizes of intense colors that follow the form of the round face, while the arms & body are made up of chunky-irregular sized cuts..What gives this Kachina an identity are the hand carved 'feet' that look more like leaves! The left foot is smaller in size than the right & what gives way to design is there are sterling beads above the shorter cut & my guess is so they can be somewhat even at the bottom. Because of whose collection & time period this turquoise came from, all of the turquoise is natural, which adds to it's pristine quality.
Made to be worn as a pendant OR pin & personally, if you to use it as a pin,I wouldn't use it on certain fabrics because of the weight & especially any fabric that's fragile. It has a shepherds hook that doesn't have a wide opening & to open it up more,I would take needle nose pliers & while going slow & easy,(Sterling is soft) you would do this on the curve of the hook, that is right below where the beads would sit. Where it's presently opened to, it will NOT accommodate big size beads.. If I can suggest that because of it's size, the Kachina would look better when brought down from the neckline with at least a 26" or longer beaded necklace.(Shown with a 26") This size does not look good when worn on a 18" or 20" necklace.

**I am not a professional photographer, but I do try to do my best at giving you accuracy in color without a whole lot of photo editing being done except to get rid of unwanted tones.
I photographed this in front of 3 different colored backdrops so you get an idea of the variation in color..
To give you close ups, pictures tend to look much more larger & much more more magnified than in actuality. Close up's make the item look so large & then you get it in hand & you are shocked since the item is much smaller than how they looked in the photos..So to get an accurate idea of how big this is,please either check it out on the mannequin photo to get a rough idea (photo 2) or you can pull out a tape measure & compare to my given measurements.
